From first skate to the NHL — the real development ladder for players in the Seattle area. Every level, every league, every program. Know where you are and where you're going.
The starting point for every hockey player. Free or low-cost sessions introduce kids to skating and basic puck handling in a no-pressure environment. USA Hockey runs free Try Hockey events at rinks throughout the Seattle area several times per year — no gear required, rentals provided. Learn to Skate programs run in multi-week sessions at every major rink.
↳ Gear: Rentals provided at free events. First purchase: helmet, gloves, and skates.
Structured introduction to the full game: skating, puck skills, shooting, and positional basics. Small-area games, no goalie required early on. Programs run through association clubs at KCI, Sno-King rinks, and Lynnwood. Kids move through Initiation and Mite Squirt levels. Sessions run Sep–Mar with summer camps available.
↳ Gear: Full hockey equipment required. Association loaner programs often available.
Balanced, intra-association league play across the Puget Sound area. The Metropolitan Hockey League (MHL) serves recreational players from U8 through U18 with balanced rosters — every kid gets equal ice time regardless of ability. Typical week includes 1–2 practices and 1 game. Excellent environment for players building confidence and love of the game. No tryouts required. Season runs September through March with an optional state festival.
↳ Cost: Most affordable competitive option. Financial aid available through One Roof Foundation at KCI.
The first competitive level with tryouts. Select (A/B) teams play in the Pacific Northwest Amateur Hockey Association (PNAHA) league — the highest level within USA Hockey's sanctioned structure for Washington state. Teams practice 2–3× per week and travel regionally. Season culminates in the PNAHA State Festival in March. Jr. Kraken hold open tryouts for U12, U14, and U16 in late April/May; U10 tryouts in August. Strong players here begin attracting attention from AAA scouts by U13–14.
↳ Key tryout dates: U10 — August. U12/14/16 — late April or early May.
The highest level of amateur youth hockey and the gateway to junior programs. AAA teams compete at the national level — USA Hockey Nationals and elite invitational tournaments. Practice load increases significantly (3–4× per week plus dryland). The PNAHA selects top-rated players annually for a development camp (ages 15–17, held at Tacoma Twin Rinks). This level is where scouts from WHL, BCHL, NAHL, and college programs actively watch players. Roster spots are extremely competitive. Players typically commit significant travel budgets.
↳ Visibility tip: Tournament exposure and game film matter here. Update your Hockey Canada / USA Hockey profile.
The bridge between youth and professional or college hockey. The WHL (Western Hockey League) is the premier junior league in the Western U.S. and Canada — both the Everett Silvertips (2026 WHL Champions) and Seattle Thunderbirds play in the region. WHL players are drafted from Bantam (U15). BCHL is the top college-prep route (Tier 1 Junior A). NAHL is an excellent Tier 2 path with strong NCAA placement. The Seattle Totems (USPHL) play at Olympic View Arena in Mountlake Terrace. Players at this level are competing for NCAA or pro contracts.
↳ WHL Bantam Draft: typically held in spring, players are ~14–15. Key showcase: Pacific District events.
College hockey recruits start as early as U14–15 in today's environment. The Pacific Northwest does not have an NCAA D1 program, meaning Seattle players looking at D1 typically commit to programs in the Upper Midwest (Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Dakota) or the Northeast (Boston, Harvard, Providence). D3 programs offer excellent hockey with strong academics and are increasingly competitive. ACHA Division 1 club hockey is another serious option. Junior hockey years are primarily about recruiting visibility and development.
↳ Recruiting timeline: First contact from D1 programs typically happens at 14–16. Game film is essential.
The Seattle Kraken made the Pacific Northwest an NHL city in 2021. The Kraken's AHL affiliate is the Coachella Valley Firebirds. The Seattle Torrent (PWHL) began play in 2025–26, providing a professional women's pathway. The NHL Draft typically selects players at 18 (first eligible year). The vast majority of professional players reach the NHL through the AHL or European leagues first — the journey rarely ends with a draft pick.
The path is long. The ones who make it combine extraordinary talent with extraordinary work ethic — and a lot of extra ice time.
